Whether we are interested in small groups, large groups or whole societies, norms concerning "appropriate" violence, and how these evolve and are contested, play an important role in shaping the types of violence that are more or less likely to occur, with what frequency, and how different agents respond.
This IAPSS Community of Interest brings together researchers and practitioners interested in:
1) how we can enhance understanding of violence norms, their contestation and evolution, and
2) how this insight can inform efforts to prevent terrorism and targeted violence.
The Violence Norms CoI is led by Joel Busher (Research Centre for Peace and Security, Coventry University) and Graham Macklin (Centre for Research on Extremism, University of Oslo) Pete Simi, (Chapman University) Lydia Khalil (Deakin University & AVERT), and Marc-André Argentino (Public Safety Canada).
